The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) has grown from 900 students in 2003 to over 8000 in the autumn of 2011.  Nearly 400 graduate students are enrolled in more than 20 graduate programs at the Masters and PhD level.  UOIT is one of Canada’s fastest growing research-intensive universities, ranking in the top 50 research funding and among the leaders in research dollars per faculty member, according to a Re$earch Money survey by the Impact Group (http://www.researchinfosource.com).

UOIT’s Strategic Research Plan encompasses five themes, including two directly related to the Smart Futures: Connecting Energy, Technology and Communities. These fields of research strength are Sustainable Energy, and Automotive, Materials and Manufacturing.  UOIT sustainable energy research includes smart grid, electrical power transmission and distribution, electric vehicles, biofuels, fuel-cell materials and vehicle applications, battery technologies, and thermochemical hydrogen production.  This research theme is supported by graduate and undergraduate programs in Energy Systems Engineering, and Energy and the Environment specialization within Physics, an Energy Engineering specialization within Mechanical Engineering, and Nuclear Engineering. Our Automotive, Materials and Manufacturing focus emphasizes research in traffic flow analysis, hybrid and alternative fuel vehicle technology, aerodynamics and design, and vehicle dynamics and performance.
